James Easter
Software Engineer
Full stack engineer on W3C Verifiable Credential platforms: SaaS consoles, npm packages, and issuer and verifier coordinators, live for California DMV and piloted with CalOES and DHS. Owns app-wide architecture as much as feature work: state design, error-handling contracts, type safety, and deployment, across web and mobile applications. Also builds the tooling: a published CLI that coding agents use to check an app against its live data.
Skills
- Languages: JavaScript, TypeScript, SQL, Python
- Front-end: React, React Native, Vue, Redux Toolkit, Material-UI, ArcGIS
- Back-end & Data: Node.js, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, JSON-LD
- Platform & Tooling: Firebase, Terraform, Docker, Vitest, CI/CD
Experience
Build and maintain Veres architecture and open-source packages for W3C credentials.
- California DMV Verifier Credential verifier running in production for the California DMV.
- Shipped its verifier coordinator and scanner for parking placards, AAMVA licenses, and Instant Identity.
- Veres Admin Interface Multi-tenant SaaS console for the Veres verifiable credential platform.
- Took it from first commit to production: organizations plus issuer, status, verifier, and workflow instances, each tenant isolated by its own encrypted data vault and zcaps.
- Wrote veres-core-client, a builder-pattern library holding the console's logic, plus its Terraform.
- DHS First Responder Verifiable Credential programs piloted with CalOES, North Dakota, and Longview Solutions.
- Delivered the issuer and verifier coordinators, plus the APIs customers use to integrate their own, from one codebase deployed into each program's environment.
- Veres Wallet Browser-based wallet for holding and presenting W3C Verifiable Credentials.
- Shipped camera QR capture in the browser, plus credential detail views that render each credential from its own renderMethod SVG template.
- Led a UI redesign of the wallet dashboard, login, and registration.
- @bedrock NPM Packages Open-source packages behind the Veres platform.
- Contribute across 17 of the platform's open-source packages, including the barcode scanner that replaced a paid dependency with the browser's Barcode Detection API.
- VC Playground Public platform for issuing and verifying example verifiable credentials.
- Maintained the example credentials, queries, and JSON-LD contexts, and added selective disclosure and multi-protocol QR issuance over VC API and OID4VCI.
Consultancy delivering full stack web and mobile products for government and commercial clients.
- OPTIC Drone flight operations platform built with GeoAcuity for the US Army Corps of Engineers.
- Led the migration of 13 React contexts onto Redux Toolkit slices, replacing mutable class instances with predictable state and ending the unexplained re-renders they caused.
- Mentor two developers, review the team's pull requests, and shape architecture and planning decisions alongside the program lead.
- Drove the codebase to zero any casts and zero type suppressions, then enforced typecheck in CI so the guarantee holds instead of eroding.
- Designed the error-handling contract now followed by the data, Redux, and component layers, documented it in-repo, and rolled it out across the codebase in five phases.
- Rebuilt the missions dashboard onto server-side paging, compiling the grid's search, sort, and filters into SQL, and shrinking Redux state from 4.2 MB per org to 63 KB per page.
- @leverstack/arcq npm-published CLI tool for developers and agents to query ArcGIS feature services.
- Ships a skill that hands coding agents the live data, so they check plans and results against the server and surface drift between the front end and the services.
- Lists every service by its human-readable name and replays any query the application makes, so data problems are reproducible from a terminal without ArcGIS Pro.
- Winterfest iOS and Android conference app for The Winterfest Group: live polling, schedules, and raffles.
- Sole developer through six major versions, shipped on the App Store and Google Play to 7,401 attendees who claimed 18,858 raffle entries across events in two states.
- Ship one codebase into three environments, local Firebase emulators through staging to production, selected by native build target, so no event weekend rides on an untested build.
- Keep the app current year over year: React Native 0.76 through 0.86, a JavaScript-to-TypeScript migration, and Firebase emulator integration tests running in CI.
- AGP Maps Geospatial product ordering and map authoring application, also built with GeoAcuity for USACE.
- Helped plan and stood up the application, then designed and implemented its global state.
- Badge Birdie Workplace badge-in and occupancy analytics SaaS.
- Shipped CSV ingestion with column mapping, dashboard charts and filters, and Stripe subscriptions.
- Secure Care Connect Verifiable credential health care application for Dogwood Logic.
- Developed the front end from UI mockups through implementation, on Vue, bedrock, and MongoDB.
Owned front-end architecture, patterns, and planning on a four-developer team, and mentored its junior developer.
- NavPortal Channel-condition platform for USACE, showing survey change over time to plan dredging.
- Compiled UI filter controls into Elasticsearch queries on the fly and applied the raw query directly to the ArcGIS layer, so the map itself narrowed as analysts filtered.
- Revitalized its sprawling Material-UI component library: pruned, documented, and reworked for reuse.
Optimal GEO (acquired by Woolpert)
Software Developer IIAug 2020 - Sep 2022Built React applications on ArcGIS and Elasticsearch, demoing each three-week sprint directly to USACE.
- Workflow Survey production tracker for USACE's JALBTCX team, following lidar blocks through processing.
- Moved blocks across a drag-and-drop board through cleaning, QC scoring, and map review, so a block's stage was the board's own state.
